Shooting Near Goffe Street Park Leaves Teen in Critical Condition; School Bus Hit by Stray Bullet

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — In a shocking incident that unfolded Friday afternoon, a bus carrying elementary school students was struck by a stray bullet as they witnessed a teenager being shot near Goffe Street Park around 3 p.m.

According to police, between eight and ten shots were fired during the incident. The victim, a 16-year-old boy who is a student in the area, was shot and later transported to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson reported that the teenager was deliberately targeted. In connection with the shooting, authorities detained two individuals nearby, one of whom was found with a ghost gun. However, these individuals are not believed to be the shooters, and the investigation into the actual suspect continues.

Justin Harmon, a spokesperson for New Haven Public Schools, stated that the school bus was returning from the Celentano Biotech Health and Medical Magnet School on Canner Street when the shooting occurred. In the face of danger, the bus driver instructively pulled the vehicle to the side and guided all students and himself to lie down for their safety. Initially, it was reported that the bus had not been struck by gunfire, but Harmon later confirmed that a stray bullet did hit the bus.

Mayor Justin Elicker expressed relief that all students and the driver were unharmed, commending the driver for their quick thinking during the alarming situation. He assured that the students have since been reunited with their parents.

This situation remains fluid, and further updates will be provided as the investigation continues. Stay tuned for more information from News 8.
