New Haven four-alarm fire brings out 100+ firefighters

Over 100 firefighters responded to a four-alarm fire in New Haven that lasted over 15 hours and caused multiple floor collapses at an industrial building on River and Ferry Streets. The fire chief labeled it as one of the city’s largest fires in the past decade, with tanks exploding and causing difficulties for firefighters. The building housed five businesses, including an auto repair shop, non-profit, appliance store, and food truck storage. Firefighters were able to rescue two workers with minor smoke inhalation, who declined hospitalization. 20 fire companies from neighboring areas assisted in combating the fire, and crews worked to remove debris while dealing with additional small fires and collapse concerns. Neighbors were initially concerned about the spread of the fire, with thick black smoke and flames visible from a distance. One local business owner had to close shop due to the fire, acknowledging the long hours firefighters were putting in to control the flames. Fire Chief Alston highlighted the challenge of defensive firefighting due to water supply limitations in the area and noted that it is too early to determine the cause of the fire. The incident affected local businesses and residents, showcasing the impact of a large-scale fire on the community.
