Do Chris Murphy and Matt Corey Back Armed Professionals in Schools during Senate Debate?

Connecticut US Senate candidates, Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy and Republican challenger Matt Corey, discussed the issue of armed personnel in Connecticut schools during the only debate of the election season. Both agreed that the decision should be left to the communities the schools are in. However, they disagreed on other solutions, with Murphy advocating for more funding for professionals like school psychologists and touting the Safer Communities Act, while Corey criticized Democrats for being soft on crime and emphasized the importance of school resource officers in preventing child predators.

Corey argued that Democrats’ policies, such as defunding the police and catch-and-release, are letting criminals back onto the streets, while Murphy maintained that crime rates are decreasing. Both candidates agreed that the decision of whether to have armed officers in schools should be made by districts, with Murphy noting that students and teachers in the state do not support arming educators.

This election marks the second time Murphy and Corey have faced each other on the ballot, with Murphy winning by a significant margin in 2018. Despite his multiple unsuccessful runs for various political offices, including the U.S. House and the Connecticut State Senate, Corey remains committed to his political career. Election Day is approaching, and early voting has already begun.
