A tragic accident in Newtown on Monday night resulted in the death of Botsford Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Peter Blomberg, who was struck by a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck while crossing Route 6. Blomberg was on his way to a fire commission meeting when the accident occurred. This is the second recent loss for the firefighting community, as volunteer firefighter Robert Sharkevich Sr. was laid to rest just days before after a fatal accident while responding to a wildfire in Berlin.
The Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association expressed shock and sorrow over the sudden loss of Blomberg, less than a week after Sharkevich’s passing. Both the association and Botsford Fire Rescue issued statements asking for support and prayers for the Blomberg family and the Newtown emergency services.
Senator Tony Hwang, representing Newtown, called Blomberg’s death devastating and tragic, offering condolences to the Blomberg family and all members of Botsford Fire Rescue. The crash is currently under investigation by authorities.
The firefighting community is in mourning over the loss of two dedicated individuals within a short span of time. Their dedication to serving their communities and risking their lives for the safety of others is being honored by their colleagues and the community at large.
