Teen with E. coli faces kidney failure following meal at McDonald’s

A high school freshman in Colorado, Kamberlyn Bowler, has been hospitalized with kidney failure due to a rare complication of E. coli poisoning after consuming McDonald’s Quarter Pounders. At least 75 people across 13 states have been infected with E. coli, likely from slivered onions served on the burgers. Kamberlyn’s symptoms started with a fever and stomach pain, leading to an E. coli infection so severe that she was in renal failure and airlifted to a hospital. Despite receiving dialysis, the lasting damage to her kidneys is uncertain. Kamberlyn and her mother plan to sue McDonald’s, and they have hired an attorney to represent them. Prior to the illness, Kamberlyn was healthy, active, and had no underlying health conditions. The family is focused on Kamberlyn’s recovery, while also aiming to raise awareness about the dangers of E. coli contamination in food. McDonald’s has apologized for the outbreak and pledged to regain trust. A national food poisoning attorney, Ron Simon, expects more cases in the outbreak beyond the 75 reported by the CDC and is working to identify the source of the contamination to prevent future incidents. E. coli infections typically cause stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, with a small percentage leading to HUS, a severe complication that can result in permanent kidney damage.
