Longtime Donald Trump ally Steve Bannon was released from prison after serving a four-month sentence for defying a congressional subpoena related to the U.S. Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021. Bannon, 70, left prison in Danbury, Connecticut and is planning to hold a news conference and resume his podcast. He had reported to prison in July after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal. Bannon had been found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the House Committee investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Bannon had called himself a “political prisoner” when he began serving his sentence, criticizing the Justice Department and Attorney General Merrick Garland. Trump, who Bannon was involved with during the 2020 election, is seeking to regain the presidency in the upcoming election against Vice President Kamala Harris.
Bannon is now appealing his convictions in federal court while facing additional criminal charges in New York state court for allegedly duping donors in a fundraising scheme for a border wall. He has pleaded not guilty to charges including money laundering, conspiracy, and fraud, with a trial scheduled for December. Despite his legal troubles, Bannon appears to be continuing his involvement in political commentary through his podcast and public appearances.
