Police suspect link between two Minneapolis homeless camp shootings resulting in three fatalities

Two weekend shootings at Minneapolis homeless encampments left three people dead and three wounded, with police saying that the incidents may be connected. The first shooting occurred on Saturday morning, killing one man and injuring two others. The second shooting took place on Sunday afternoon, resulting in two men being pronounced dead at the scene and a woman critically wounded. Police have not ruled out the possibility that the two shootings are related. Despite detaining three men initially, no arrests have been made in connection with the shootings.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey attributed the rise in violence in and near homeless encampments to fentanyl, calling the shootings “incredibly tragic and sad.” He emphasized the impact of synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl, which were responsible for a significant portion of drug overdose deaths. The victims of the shootings were identified as Deven Leonard Caston, Louis Lemons Jr., and Christopher Washington, all dying from multiple gunshot wounds.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara condemned the shootings as “outrageous” and stressed the need for encampment residents to accept available resources to address narcotic and mental health issues. He highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of all individuals, including those living in encampments. Police are continuing to investigate the incidents and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
