The state of Connecticut is currently facing a significant challenge with wildfires, with over 50 fires being monitored. The largest fire, the Hawthorne Fire in Berlin, has already scorched between 120 and 130 acres. Tragically, six firefighters have been injured, including Robert Sharkevich, Sr., who lost his life in a utility vehicle rollover. Berlin Fire Chief Jonn Massirio expressed condolences for Sharkevich’s family and friends.
Firefighters have been making progress in containing the fires, but hot spots still remain. Additional crews, including a team from New York City, are being brought in to assist and manage resources. However, with warmer temperatures predicted for later in the week and extremely dry conditions in the state, the danger of wildfires persists.
Governor Ned Lamont has emphasized the flammability of the state, describing it as a “tinder box.” He has issued warnings about the potential for extreme red flag days and urges residents to follow burn bans in place. The state is urging caution and vigilance until significant rainfall occurs to mitigate the risk of wildfires.
As the state continues to battle these fires, it is evident that additional resources and support are crucial. The efforts of firefighters and emergency responders are commendable as they work tirelessly to protect lives and property in the face of this ongoing crisis.
