Raymond Childs III, a 21-year-old man from Indianapolis, was convicted of six counts of murder, including the shooting deaths of five people, including family members and a pregnant woman who was almost due to give birth. The killings occurred following an argument over Childs staying out late when he was 17 years old. Childs methodically went from room to room, shooting the victims, which included his father, stepmother, two siblings, and his brother’s girlfriend, who was pregnant. Childs’ 15-year-old brother was also shot but survived by fleeing the house.
Childs was arrested the day after the January 2021 shooting and was found guilty of attempted murder and carrying a handgun without a license as well. His conviction came after a mistrial in his first trial due to a witness verbally confronting him in front of the jury. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears stated that the verdict provided justice for the victims, and the sentencing for Childs was set for January 7. He faces 40 to 65 years in prison on each murder count, 20 to 40 years on the attempted murder charge, and one to six years on the handgun charge. The prosecutor commended the trial team, law enforcement, and witnesses for their dedication to seeking justice for the victims in this horrific crime.
