A driver was rescued by Good Samaritans after their vehicle crashed into the Niantic River in Waterford on Monday night. The Oswegatchie Fire Company #4 responded to the scene just after 8 p.m. where they found an SUV in the river.
Witnesses reported hearing the crash and immediately jumped into the water to help rescue the driver. Sandra Robberia, one of the rescuers, mentioned that they acted quickly without a second thought and hoped others would do the same for them in a similar situation.
The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment, although the extent of their injuries is currently unknown. Another person was also hospitalized with unknown injuries.
The cause of the crash remains unclear and Waterford police are conducting an investigation into the incident. The quick and selfless actions of the Good Samaritans who helped rescue the driver have been commended by the local community. The willingness of individuals to put themselves at risk in order to help another in need is a testament to the strong sense of community and compassion present in the Waterford area.
