Hundreds gathered on Monday to mourn the loss of Wethersfield firefighter Robert “Sharkey” Sharkevich Sr., who tragically died while fighting a fire in Berlin. The 66-year-old veteran firefighter was remembered as a dedicated member of the Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department and a former Hartford Fire Department veteran of 25 years. His funeral service, coinciding with National First Responders Day, was attended by friends, family, and first responders from across the state.
During the service at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, Sharkevich’s casket was brought to the church on a fire engine, escorted by police motorcycles and fellow first responders. His nephew, Gary Sharkevich Jr., and his son, Robert Sharkevich Jr., both firefighters, shared emotional tributes to their fallen family member, celebrating his legacy of camaraderie, laughter, and spirit.
Described by his sister, Karen Letizio, as a selfless and courageous hero, Sharkevich was honored by those who knew him as a symbol of strength and bravery. Many attendees at his wake in Wethersfield paid their respects over the weekend, showing their support for the fallen firefighter and his family.
The community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant, who will be remembered for his commitment to protecting others and his unwavering spirit of selflessness. Robert Sharkevich Sr. will be deeply missed, but his legacy of service and sacrifice will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
