Crews are currently battling multiple brush fires across the state of Connecticut, with Governor Ned Lamont declaring a state of emergency due to critical fire weather conditions. A red flag warning has been issued for Saturday, urging people to avoid burning anything outdoors to prevent more wildfires from starting.
With wind gusts of 25-30 mph, low humidity, and dry vegetation, the conditions are optimal for wildfires to break out. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is actively monitoring and responding to several brush fires, including the Hawthorne Fire in Berlin and the Weston Saugatuck Reservoir Island fire.
In addition to the brush fires, a motor vehicle crash on Route 44 resulted in a two-acre brush fire on Friday night. Officials are urging residents to refrain from activities that could spark a fire and to keep flammable objects away from fires. They also recommend clearing a 10-foot diameter circle around fires, keeping firefighting tools nearby, and following safety tips to prevent fires from spreading.
Local resources are currently managing fires in Meriden Mountain, Burlington, East Granby, Tolland, East Thompson, and Easton. The DEEP continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. For more information on fire safety tips and prevention measures, residents can visit the official website.
