Football game in Berlin celebrates dedicated first responders

High school football teams in Berlin, Connecticut, came together to honor the firefighters battling a brush fire on Lamentation Mountain. Berlin High School player Coleman Sharpe, whose uncles are firefighters, expressed concern for their safety during the game against Manchester High School. The teams paid tribute to Robert Sharkevich Sr., who tragically passed away while responding to the fire.

Berlin’s football coach, Joe Aresimowicz, emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made by first responders. The game served as an opportunity to spread a message beyond football and show support for the Sharkevich family. Berlin ultimately won the game 29-7 and also paid tribute during a soccer game against Wethersfield.

David Francalangia, the athletic director for Berlin High School, highlighted the importance of showing support for the Sharkevich family and first responders. He mentioned that having some of the responders attend a tribute event was a positive step towards starting the healing process. The community came together to show appreciation for the firefighters and other first responders, making the games more than just sporting events.
