66-year-old Robert “Sharky” Sharkevich Sr., a Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department member and retired City of Hartford firefighter, tragically lost his life while battling the Hawthorne brush fire in Berlin when a utility vehicle rolled over onto him. Sharkevich, remembered for his dedication and sacrifice, had firefighting in his blood and had a calling to serve others.
Sharkevich’s sister, Karen Letizio, shared that he and his family had a tradition of rushing off to help others, even during family gatherings. Sharkevich, along with his two brothers and even his own son, carried on the family tradition of firefighting. Despite the dangers, they were dedicated to running into fires to save lives.
Letizio recalled the heartbreaking moment when she learned of her brother’s passing and the overwhelming support the family has received from the community. A procession was held to honor Sharkevich’s life, with firefighters and community members lining the streets to pay their respects.
Sharkevich was described as a devoted family man, a proud father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle, and cousin who was willing to do anything for anyone. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Sharkevich’s family in this difficult time.
The tragic loss of Robert Sharkevich Sr. serves as a reminder of the bravery and selflessness of firefighters who risk their lives to protect their communities. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy of service and sacrifice will live on.
