Michael Pittman, an assistant professor specializing in dinosaur studies in Hong Kong, expressed excitement about the landmark discovery of dinosaur bones on Port Island. He noted that finding dinosaur bones is difficult due to the specific age and environment required, and he hopes that more fossils can be discovered in Hong Kong. The discovered bone is said to be part of a larger skeleton that could be “meters long.”
Pittman highlighted that Hong Kong has not had any locally discovered fossils until now, unlike China, the United States, Canada, and Argentina, which are considered the top countries for dinosaur paleontology. He emphasized the significance of the discovery in Hong Kong, stating that it marks a new chapter in the region’s dinosaur research.
In the neighboring province of Guangdong, various types of dinosaur fossils and over 30,000 dinosaur egg fossils have been found, showcasing the rich paleontological history of the area. Pittman’s remarks demonstrate the importance of the newly discovered dinosaur bones in Hong Kong as they contribute to the growing body of knowledge about dinosaurs in the region.
