New Britain man flees crash after driving erratically on blown-out tire

A New Britain man, Raymond Cortez, was arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash and leading a trooper on a chase in Connecticut. The 34-year-old has been charged with multiple offenses, including reckless driving and illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle. Cortez was released on a $5,000 bond following his arrest.

The incident began when state police received a call about an erratic driver with a blown-out tire at around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday. It was later discovered that the vehicle was involved in a crash and Newington police were searching for it.

A trooper attempted to stop Cortez, who was driving on a rim with his vehicle crossing over the double yellow lines multiple times. Despite the trooper’s efforts, Cortez did not stop, and the chase was eventually called off due to safety concerns. The vehicle was later found abandoned on Route 4 in Goshen.

Cortez was located by a K-9 unit and taken into custody around midnight. During the arrest, he claimed to have a medical issue and felt faint, resulting in him being taken to a hospital. Troopers found a large hunting knife inside the abandoned vehicle.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and Cortez is expected to appear in court to face the charges against him.
