Flags lowered to half-staff to honor firefighter who died battling brush fire in Berlin – NBC Connecticut

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honor of firefighter Robert Sharkevich Sr., who tragically died at a brush fire in Berlin. Sharkevich, a dedicated member of the Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department and former Hartford Fire Department member, lost his life when the fire utility task vehicle he was in rolled over during the massive brush fire on Lamentation Mountain. Three other firefighters were also injured in the incident.

Governor Lamont praised Sharkevich’s selfless dedication to public service, calling him a hero for his commitment to the safety of his community and surrounding areas. Flags will remain at half-staff until the date of Sharkevich’s interment.

The fire, now known as the Hawthorne fire, has forced the closure of Lamentation Mountain State Park and Giuffrida Park in Meriden, and has spread to over 80 acres in size. Fire officials anticipate it will take three to four days to contain the blaze, and investigations are ongoing.

The tragic loss of Sharkevich serves as a reminder of the courage and sacrifice shown by firefighters in the line of duty. The community mourns his passing and extends condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues in the Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department and Hartford Fire Department.
