Robert Sharkevich, a 66-year-old firefighter from Wethersfield, tragically lost his life after a utility task vehicle rolled over at the scene of a brush fire on Lamentation Mountain. Three other firefighters were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries and since released. Sharkevich, who was also a retired Hartford firefighter, was described as a vital part of the brotherhood by the Hartford Fire Department.
The procession to honor Sharkevich stretched for miles as departments from all over Connecticut escorted his body to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office. The cause of death will be determined by the office, with the Meriden Police Department leading the investigation.
The fire on Lamentation Mountain, now referred to as the Hawthorne fire, resulted in the closure of local state parks. Fire officials estimate it may take three to four days to contain the blaze as the investigation continues. The tight-knit firefighting community in surrounding towns has been deeply affected by the loss of Sharkevich, reminding everyone of the bravery and commitment that define their profession.
