The intersection of North Main Street and Albany Avenue in West Hartford, known as Bishop’s Corner, is set to undergo a redesign to improve pedestrian safety. The state Department of Transportation is hosting a public information session on Tuesday night to present the plans to the community.
The redesign will involve eliminating right-turn lanes and islands where pedestrians currently wait to cross. Instead, the DOT plans to construct a larger eight-foot side path for pedestrians and bicyclists. This change is part of the DOT’s effort to prioritize safety for all modes of transportation, rather than focusing solely on moving cars quickly through the area.
The project has been in development for years, with construction now scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027. The total cost of the project has increased to $7.8 million, with the majority of funding coming from federal sources. The public is invited to attend the open house at the Bishop’s Corner Senior Center on Starkel Road at 6:30 p.m., with a formal presentation following at 7 p.m.
The community will also have the opportunity to provide feedback during a two-week comment period. This redesign aims to create a safer and more accessible intersection for pedestrians and cyclists in West Hartford.
