The iconic 70-year-old Olympia Diner on the Berlin Turnpike in Newington, Connecticut, is potentially facing the end of an era as Arista Development, a Massachusetts-based company, is set to purchase the property pending approval from the Newington Planning and Zoning commission. The plan is to redevelop the property with a new quick service restaurant and drive-thru, pending an amendment to the town’s zoning regulations.
Established in 1954, Olympia Diner has a rich history as one of the 2,000 diners built by the James O’Mahony Diner Company of New Jersey. Some loyal customers have been dining at the diner for decades and are saddened by the potential sale. Employees at the diner have not been informed of the impending sale and express concern over job security.
Owner Stavros Gavrilis has not commented on the sale. Newington’s Planning and Zoning commission is set to review the proposed plans at an upcoming meeting, with no vote scheduled at that time. Customers view Olympia Diner as a landmark and are disappointed at the prospect of it becoming another fast-food restaurant, citing its significance in the community.
The fate of Olympia Diner hangs in the balance as discussions continue, with the potential for a new restaurant to take its place on the Berlin Turnpike. Customers and employees alike are hopeful for a resolution that will preserve the diner’s legacy and maintain its role as a beloved community gathering spot.
