A brush fire in Vernon, Connecticut kept firefighters busy on Monday afternoon as they worked to contain the nine-acre blaze in the northeast section of town. The fire, located just south of Interstate 84, was reported at 2:30 p.m. and was under control several hours later.
While the bulk of the fire has been knocked down, authorities expect it to continue smoldering overnight. A team from the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection surveyed the perimeter of the fire and is confident it won’t spread any further. Residents in the area between exits 66 and 67 of I-84 may still smell smoke throughout the night.
Two firefighters were evaluated at the scene but did not require hospitalization. The Vernon Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire, and several fire departments assisted in its containment.
As the community recovers from this brush fire, officials are reminding residents to remain vigilant and prepared for future incidents. The quick response of local and state firefighters helped prevent this fire from spreading further, but it serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety.
