Warm temperatures in October have attracted families to the beach, despite the official end of the summer season. At Hammonasset Beach State Park, moms Kristiina Hormigo, Erica Bencivenga, and Jillian Stone decided to homeschool their children on the shore, teaching them about tides. Although they had to dig out beachwear that had been put away for the season, they felt it was worth it.
Other local neighbors, like Alexa Clark and Brittany O’Hara, have also been taking advantage of the warm weather to enjoy the beach with their horses. This unexpected surge in visitors has surprised some, like Hartford HealthCare’s Dr. Anumeha Singh, who encourages everyone to continue to follow safety tips, such as hydrating, wearing sun protection, and being cautious around the water.
Despite concerns about global warming, many are happy to be outdoors and enjoying the unseasonably warm weather. The scene at the beach during October reflects a sense of joy and appreciation for nature, even as the calendar turns to fall. The sense of community and connection to the natural world shines through in the stories of families and neighbors coming together to make the most of this unexpected opportunity to enjoy the beach in October.
