Groton, CT is considering a new ordinance to address the issue of illegal dirt bike and ATV use in the town following a fatal crash involving a 24-year-old woman in August 2023. The proposed ordinance would impose fines starting at $1,000 for the first offense and increasing for subsequent offenses, in line with a state law allowing towns to enact such fines. Mayor Rachel Franco believes these fines will deter individuals from engaging in these illegal activities.
Residents in the community, such as Peggy Criscitiello and Brad Whipple, support the proposed ordinance due to safety concerns for both riders and other drivers on the road. Similar ordinances are already in place in nearby towns like New London and New Haven, with penalties including fines for riders and gas station owners who enable the use of these vehicles. Guilford also imposes fines on passengers of illegal vehicles.
The next step in Groton is to hold a public hearing to allow residents to comment on the proposed ordinance. Chief Fusaro of the Groton Police Department emphasized the importance of addressing the issue to prevent further tragedies like the one that occurred in August. Overall, the community is taking proactive steps to deter illegal dirt bike and ATV use and promote road safety for all residents.
