Two homes damaged and evacuations triggered by Oakland Hills fire in California

A five-alarm brush fire named the Keller Fire in Oakland, California, burned two homes and led to evacuation orders on Friday. The fire started in a home on Mountain Avenue and spread to a grove of Eucalyptus trees, growing to 15 acres. By Saturday morning, the fire was 50% contained. Two homes were impacted by the flames, while dozens of others were threatened but not damaged. Evacuation orders were initially issued for Campus Drive and Crystal Ridge Court before expanding to surrounding areas. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao emphasized the importance of following evacuation orders to protect citizens’ health. One homeowner, Delane Sims, shared that her husband narrowly escaped when the landscape caught on fire, causing a front window to explode. Despite the damage to their home, Sims expressed gratitude that her husband got out safely. Fire Chief Damon Covington stated that while crews had halted the forward progress of the fire, there was still much work to be done. The Oakland Fire Department continued to work aggressively to fully extinguish the blaze.
