South Korea reports that North Korean soldiers in Russia are preparing for battle in Ukraine conflict.

North Korea has reportedly sent 1,500 special forces troops to Russia for training and acclimatizing at military bases in the far east. The troops are expected to be deployed for combat in the war in Ukraine. South Korea’s spy agency, the NIS, has been working with Ukrainian intelligence and using facial recognition technology to identify North Korean officers in Ukraine supporting Russian forces. North Korea has shipped artillery rounds, ballistic missiles, and anti-tank rockets to Russia since August last year, totaling over eight million artillery and rocket rounds. The NIS confirmed direct military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, which had previously been reported by foreign media.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol held a security meeting to discuss the situation, and officials expressed concern over the security threat posed by the closer ties between Russia and North Korea. South Korea, along with its allies, is closely monitoring North Korea’s troop dispatch to Russia and will respond with all available means. Despite pressure to arm Ukraine with lethal weapons, South Korea, a major arms exporter, has not openly done so. The situation with North Korean troops in Russia poses a significant security threat both domestically and internationally.
