Congressman John Larson, seeking a 13th term in the 1st District, faces two opponents this year. Republican Jim Griffin and Green Party member Mary Sanders are former Democrats with differing views on key issues.
Larson is focused on increasing Social Security payments by removing the cap on payroll taxes. He also supports comprehensive immigration reform and the construction of more affordable housing.
Griffin aims to bring back manufacturing jobs to grow the middle class and supports former President Trump’s immigration policies. However, he also holds unsubstantiated beliefs, including government control over weather and conspiracy theories about elite bankers undermining the U.S.
Sanders advocates for reducing military spending and focusing on a policy of peace to address immigrants’ needs, including universal healthcare and affordable housing. She emphasizes the importance of a humane approach to immigration and addressing root causes, like U.S.-imposed sanctions.
All candidates support a woman’s right to choose, but only Larson and Sanders would vote to codify Roe v. Wade. Griffin believes states should decide on abortion laws and advocates for the teaching of the Ten Commandments in schools where abortion is legal.
Voters in the 1st District will have a choice between these three candidates with vastly different priorities and approaches to key issues affecting their community and the country.
