Former New Haven movie theater transformed into new child care center

A new child care center has opened in New Haven, CT, replacing the former Cine-4 movie theatre on Flint Street. The Friends Center for Children opened its third facility, aiming to address the child care crisis in the area. The new campus will create 13 jobs for teachers and provide care for an additional 32 infants, with plans to expand to accommodate even more children in the future.

Connecticut is currently facing a shortage of child care slots, high costs for care, and low wages for staff, creating a challenging situation for families and providers. Friends Center’s executive director, Allyx Schiavone, highlighted the difficulty of balancing affordable care for families with fair wages for educators.

The organization is working to make child care more affordable, as current costs can consume up to 20% of a family’s household income, totaling around $18,000 per child per year. Parent and co-director for Friends Center’s emotional well-being program, Andrea Tabbs-Smith, emphasized the struggle that many families face in accessing reliable child care.

Friends Center is advocating for investments in home ownership to open more home child care centers, as well as providing rent-free housing for early childhood educators to grow the workforce. The new Flint Street campus will also feature a children’s library, teacher training space, mobile library, and teacher resource hub, contributing to the community’s child care resources and support.
