In an interview on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,” former President Donald Trump criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for her policies on the southern border, suggesting that migrants have “bad genes” and blaming her for allowing murderers to enter the United States. Trump cited a misleading figure of 13,000 immigrants convicted of homicide living outside of ICE detention, but experts noted that this number does not account for those detained on the state or local level and many crossed the border before Biden’s presidency. Border crossings have decreased, partially due to Biden administration policies and Mexico’s efforts. Trump has repeatedly attacked Harris over the border issue, calling for her impeachment and prosecution. Trump’s comments on immigration have often included disparaging rhetoric and race science, such as praising a nearly all-white crowd in Minnesota for having “good genes” in 2020. This racist rhetoric has drawn comparisons to Adolf Hitler and has been criticized by Republican lawmakers. Trump’s history of invoking race science and disparaging immigrants continues to be a divisive issue in American politics.
