The war in Gaza, which began on October 7th last year, has resulted in the deaths of over 41,000 Palestinians and has left the Strip devastated. Almost 100 Israelis are still being held hostage by Hamas, with fewer than 70 believed to be alive.
In anticipation of the first anniversary of the war, thousands of people have gathered in major European capitals to show support for Palestine.
In Rome, a peaceful demonstration turned violent as some protesters clashed with police, resulting in injuries on both sides. Similar protests took place in London, where arrests were made, and in Madrid, where demands for a ceasefire in Gaza were reiterated.
In Hamburg, a peaceful demonstration saw chants of “Stop the Genocide” and calls to end the conflict. In Belgrade, protesters expressed anger at their government’s support for Israel and criticized arms sales to the country.
Additional rallies were planned in Greece, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Switzerland.
Security in several European cities has been heightened due to concerns that the conflict in the Middle East could inspire terror attacks or lead to violence during protests.
The war between Hamas and Israel has resulted in a significant loss of life, with over 41,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis killed. The conflict continues to impact both sides, with nearly 100 Israeli hostages still in Gaza.
