Journalist Hassan Hamad was killed in an attack on his home in the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza by Israeli forces, bringing the total number of journalists killed in the conflict to 175. The 19-year-old journalist, who had been documenting the war in Gaza for over a year, had received threats from an Israeli officer warning him to stop filming in the area just days before his death.
His colleagues and the Government Media Office in Gaza confirmed his death, describing how he had bravely continued his work despite the dangers, staying away from his family to protect them and facing challenges to send videos from the front lines. The Committee to Protect Journalists reported that at least 128 journalists and media workers have been among the more than 41,000 people killed since the conflict began in October 2023.
The Israeli government has not yet commented on Hamad’s death. Maha Hussaini, a Palestinian journalist, shared the message Hamad received from the Israeli officer threatening him to stop filming. CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna emphasized the importance of press freedom and the dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones, calling for those responsible for attacks on journalists to be held accountable under international law. Hamad’s tragic death serves as a reminder of the risks journalists take to report on conflict and the impact of their loss on the truth.
