Harris travels to North Carolina to assess the damage from Helene – NBC Connecticut

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris visited North Carolina for the second time in four days to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Helene and pledge ongoing federal support. Despite false claims made by Republican Donald Trump about the federal response, Harris praised the heroes among us who are working tirelessly to help those affected by the disaster.

Harris met with state and local officials to discuss ongoing federal assistance and thanked those providing shelter, food, and support to their fellow citizens. She also visited a distribution center to help pack aid kits and spoke with volunteers and families affected by the storm, assuring them of the government’s long-term support.

President Joe Biden also visited the disaster zone, surveying the damage and meeting with affected families. Both Biden and Harris have been vocal about the government’s efforts to provide relief to those impacted by the storm, including covering costs for rescue and recovery efforts across the Southeast.

In a highly politicized environment, Trump has falsely criticized the federal government’s response and spread misinformation about climate change. Despite these distractions, both Democratic candidates remain focused on providing assistance to those in need and working to ensure funding for disaster relief programs.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the focus remains on supporting the affected communities and helping them recover from the worst storm to hit the U.S. mainland since Katrina in 2005. Both political parties continue to offer assistance, but the true heroes are the individuals on the ground providing support and aid to those in need.
