In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, FEMA’s response is under scrutiny from members of Congress, with concerns raised about the agency’s preparation and coordination efforts. Rep. Anthony D’Esposito has requested details from FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell on the agency’s advanced forecasting models and resource pre-positioning.
While some officials have criticized FEMA’s response, others have praised the federal government’s actions. Sen. Thom Tillis defended FEMA, acknowledging that improvements can always be made while emphasizing the collaborative effort to address the disaster.
Meanwhile, a rescue operation is underway in Tennessee to assist individuals stranded on a hospital roof due to severe flooding caused by the storm. Rep. Chuck Edwards, initially critical of FEMA’s response, has since described immediate action taken after expressing his concerns to the White House.
FEMA has provided over $110 million in federal assistance and deployed more than 6,400 personnel to support recovery efforts. The agency has distributed millions of meals, water, generators, and tarps to those affected by Hurricane Helene.
Despite challenges, FEMA’s efforts in assisting survivors and coordinating relief operations are ongoing as impacted communities work towards recovery.
