In a passionate speech at the Tory conference, James Cleverly has declared his candidacy for leader of the Conservative Party, claiming to be the candidate that Labour, Lib Dems, and Reform UK fear the most. Cleverly emphasized that he is running not to be someone, but to do something, urging voters to choose a candidate who can deliver results and communicate effectively.
Highlighting his experience as foreign secretary and his tough stance against Russia and China, Cleverly stressed the need for a leader who has already done their apprenticeship to get the party winning again. He outlined his plans to revive the party’s campaigning machine, increase defense spending, and not engage in any pacts with other parties.
Cleverly also took the opportunity to recall conservative achievements, criticize the Labour Party for their scandals, and poke fun at the Lib Dems. Referencing Ronald Reagan as his political hero, he called for a more optimistic and relatable approach to conservatism.
In a personal note, Cleverly shared his background as a mixed-race kid who served in the army and faced setbacks in life, including losing his job and starting a small business. Despite not planning to run for leader, he felt compelled to do so for the party he loves and to serve the British people.
Cleverly started his speech with an apology on behalf of Conservative MPs, acknowledging that they had let down party members and promising to be better under his leadership. The video presentation featured testimonials from party members, emphasizing Cleverly’s ability to unite the party.
