East Haven Dunkin Donuts employees are being praised for their quick thinking after intervening in a violent carjacking incident involving a pregnant woman in the drive-thru on Tuesday evening. Police were called to the scene and arrested the suspect, William Rodriguez, who is facing a multitude of charges for this and other crimes.
The incident occurred when the suspect parked his vehicle in front of the victim’s car, got in the passenger’s side, and demanded her keys. When she refused, he began assaulting her until she was able to escape and seek help inside the Dunkin Donuts. Two male employees went outside, confronted the suspect, and restrained him until police arrived.
Rodriguez faces charges such as second-degree breach of peace, assault on emergency medical personnel, robbery, reckless endangerment, assault on a pregnant person, assault, and interfering with an officer. The vehicle he was driving was reported stolen from New Haven.
Rodriguez was held on a $250,000 bond for the carjacking charges and had outstanding warrants totaling $475,000. He was scheduled to be arraigned in court on Wednesday, Oct. 2. The heroic actions of the Dunkin Donuts employees helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation, and their bravery has been commended by the East Haven police.
