During the recent Vice Presidential debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance, Walz appeared anxious and uncomfortable while Vance was polished and played nice. Walz admitted to misspeaking in past comments and struggled to attack Vance, who refused to clarify whether Donald Trump had lost the 2020 election.
Vance blamed a wide range of issues, from school shootings to the housing crisis, on undocumented immigrants and US border policy. Despite experts attributing the housing crisis to a long-term decline in supply, Vance repeated his calls for mass deportations to lower housing costs.
Vance also focused on regaining women’s trust on abortion policy, pairing soft rhetoric with support for leaving abortion laws to the states. Walz highlighted a woman who died due to a state law criminalizing abortion procedures in Georgia, prompting Vance to agree that she should still be alive.
Despite escalating tensions in the Middle East, with Iran launching a missile attack on Israel, the debate only featured one question on the topic. Both candidates avoided supporting a pre-emptive strike on Iran, instead emphasizing support for Israel.
Overall, the debate showcased Vance as a polished and genial candidate, while Walz struggled to attack his opponent and convey his message effectively. Despite differences on various issues, both candidates appeared to make efforts towards civility and agreement during the debate.
