Community members gathered in New Haven on Tuesday to mark the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Survivor Angel Hubbard shared her story of escaping domestic violence and honored those who lost their lives to it. The Sound of Hope ceremony paid tribute to 26 people who tragically died from domestic violence in Connecticut last year. Pastor Hector Vera shared his childhood experience of witnessing his father abusing his mother, highlighting the lasting impact of domestic violence on families.
Law enforcement officials were also recognized for their efforts in protecting and supporting domestic violence victims. Esperina Stubblefield, the director of Domestic Violence Services at BHcare, emphasized the importance of everyone’s role in fighting domestic violence year-round.
Hubbard encouraged those in need of help to seek safety and not be afraid. She stressed the importance of taking back power from perpetrators. For more information on domestic violence services, visit www.BHcare.org, or call the 24-hour Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-888-774-2900 for immediate assistance.
Throughout October, communities across the country are uniting to raise awareness about the devastating impact of domestic violence. Hubbard’s story serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of survivors and the ongoing need for support and advocacy to combat domestic violence.
