A historic village in western North Carolina, Asheville’s Biltmore Village, has been devastated by flooding from Hurricane Helene. Residents, like Tammy Borgesen, are without power and are waiting out the storm, hoping for the best. Water levels are several feet high, causing significant damage to the area.
The French Broad River has risen above its banks in the River Arts District, further adding to the destruction in Asheville. With a population of 95,000, the city is facing widespread devastation and loss as a result of the hurricane.
The impact of the hurricane is being felt throughout the southeast, with at least 42 confirmed deaths and millions of customers without power in multiple states. President Joe Biden has approved emergency declarations in several states, including Georgia, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
Federal assistance is being provided to the affected states, with over 1,500 federal personnel deployed to assist with search and rescue, medical assistance, and power restoration. The destruction caused by Hurricane Helene serves as a stark reminder of the impacts of climate change, and the need for immediate action to address these challenges.
