The government of Nepal has deployed more than 3,000 security personnel to assist in rescue efforts following deadly floods and landslides caused by incessant rains. At least 32 people have been killed and 12 others are reported missing as parts of the country, including the capital Kathmandu, have been inundated. Authorities are warning of more flash floods in multiple rivers, with monsoon rains being a common cause of devastation in the region.
Efforts are underway to rescue and locate missing individuals, with police working alongside other agencies and locals. The impact of the flooding has been extensive, with one truck driver reporting that his entire truck was underwater. Domestic flights from Kathmandu have been canceled, affecting more than 150 departures, while international flights are still operational.
Police are working to clear debris and reopen roads blocked by landslides, with weather forecasts suggesting that the rains may not subside until Sunday. The Koshi River in the southeast is running above the danger level, posing a potential threat to neighboring areas in India. Climate change has been cited as a factor in the increasing frequency and intensity of rain-related disasters in Nepal, with this year alone seeing more than 170 fatalities.
