Appalachian State University was forced to cancel their home football game against Liberty due to the impacts of severe weather from Tropical Storm Helene in Boone, North Carolina. The town was placed under a state of emergency due to heavy rains causing flooding in the North Carolina mountains. The nonconference game, scheduled for Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff, will not be rescheduled.
In addition to the football game, App State also had to cancel a home field hockey game against Bellarmine that was set for Friday. Tropical Storm Helene made landfall in Florida with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph, causing damage that extended hundreds of miles north.
The severe weather also affected sports outside of North Carolina, as the Nashville Predators postponed their home preseason NHL game against the Tampa Bay Lightning scheduled for Friday night. The game has been rescheduled for October 7th.
The cancellations due to Tropical Storm Helene serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and its impact on sporting events. Appalachian State fans and players, as well as those looking forward to the NHL preseason game in Nashville, will have to wait for rescheduled dates to watch their teams in action.
