Tensions mount as Trump and Zelenskyy hold meeting on US support for Ukraine – NBC Connecticut

Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy amid rising tensions over Ukraine’s defense against Russia. The meeting, set to take place at Trump Tower in New York, comes on the heels of Vice President Kamala Harris expressing support for Ukraine during her recent meeting with Zelenskyy.

Trump has hinted at potentially brokering a deal between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy, but has also criticized Ukraine and praised Russia’s military accomplishments in the past. Zelenskyy, on the other hand, has implied that Trump oversimplifies the conflict and does not fully understand the situation.

Despite some initial uncertainty, the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy is now set to proceed. The Ukrainian leader is making a plea to allies at the U.N. General Assembly, while Trump has faced backlash for his comments on Ukraine and Russia.

While Trump and some allies have been skeptical of U.S. support for Ukraine, others, including Senator Lindsey Graham, have shown support for Kyiv’s defense against Moscow’s invasion. Graham, who has connections to both Trump and Zelenskyy, reportedly had a private conversation with the Ukrainian president during a recent meeting on Capitol Hill.

The meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy is expected to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and could have significant implications, as the former president’s stance on the situation differs from that of many Republican allies who have backed Ukraine’s defense efforts.
