Connecticut National Guard has been deployed to North Carolina to assist in storm Helene recovery efforts. Major Michael Wilcoxson stated that soldiers will be involved in moving personnel and commodities like food and water supplies. This deployment marks the first mission since they assisted with Hurricane Florence recovery in 2018. Wilcoxson emphasized that the National Guard’s duty extends beyond Connecticut and they are prepared to help any community in the United States during times of crisis.
As the National Guard heads towards the disaster area, multiple flights filled with people impacted by the storm landed at Bradley International Airport. Louis Nocero and his wife Diane described the intense winds they experienced. Chris James, visiting from the Tampa area, shared how grateful he was to have left unscathed while friends back home were dealing with significant damage. The day marked the 39-year anniversary of Hurricane Gloria, a storm that devastated Connecticut.
Teresa Rezendes Atkinson, who grew up in Stonington and now resides in Georgia, reflected on the impact of past hurricanes. She expressed gratitude for escaping major damage during Hurricane Helene and shared that many in her area were still dealing with power outages and cleanup. The Connecticut National Guard’s deployment highlights the importance of unity and support among states during times of natural disasters.
