Trump campaign supports ‘universal’ IVF access, offering potential support for LGBTQ+ couples

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign announced that if he were re-elected, his administration would support “universal access” to in-vitro fertilization (IVF), potentially allowing same-sex couples to receive coverage for the expensive fertility treatment. Trump’s campaign stated that he supports universal access to contraception and IVF, and plans to have either the government or insurance companies cover the cost of IVF for all Americans that want or need it. However, there has been little follow-up on how this policy would be implemented. The campaign also criticized Democrats for their stance on abortion and claimed that Kamala Harris and the Democrats are out of touch with the majority of Americans on the issue. Trump’s vice presidential pick, Sen. JD Vance, voted against legislation to protect IVF and the Department of Health and Human Services, under the Trump administration, ended discrimination protections for LGBTQ people. Trump has made promises regarding LGBTQ issues, focusing on transgender people, while mentioning gay, lesbian, and bisexual Americans less frequently.
Currently, only seven states require IVF benefits to include same-sex couples, and insurance coverage for fertility treatments like IVF is limited. A lawsuit was filed by a gay couple in New York City alleging that the city’s health insurance plan is discriminatory for not covering IVF for male couples. Overall, Trump’s campaign promises on IVF and LGBTQ issues have faced criticism and speculation about their potential impact and implementation.
