The US District Court for the Southern District of New York has announced a federal indictment against Eric Adams, charging him with wire fraud, bribery, and receiving campaign contributions from foreign nationals. The 57-page indictment alleges that Adams sought and accepted illegal campaign contributions through straw donors, allowing foreign contributors to bypass federal laws preventing foreign influence in US elections.
Federal prosecutors have called Adams’ alleged misconduct a “grave breach” of the public trust, accusing him of accepting luxury travel and stays, including suites at five-star hotels in Turkey, in exchange for favors. Despite the charges, Adams remains defiant and maintains his innocence, stating that he follows campaign rules and the law.
The indictment also reveals that Adams intervened in the New York City Fire Department’s inspection process for a high-rise building owned by the Turkish government, allowing it to open without passing safety inspections. The indictment further alleges that a Turkish official pressured Adams not to make statements about the Armenian genocide, to which Adams complied.
The investigation into Adams’ alleged corruption will continue, with a focus on holding more individuals accountable. The Southern District of New York remains committed to rooting out corruption without regard to political affiliations. Adams has vowed to defend himself against the charges and has stated his intention to continue leading New York City.
