Israel rejects US-French ceasefire proposal for Hezbollah amid Middle East crisis: Updates from the Middle East and North Africa

Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, has rejected a US-French proposed ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, stating that “there will be no ceasefire in the north.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office also dismissed the proposal and instructed the IDF to continue fighting with full force. Over 600 people have been killed in Lebanon since the intense bombing campaign began, leading to tens of thousands of displacements on both sides of the border. The far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, also rejected the idea of a ceasefire, advocating for the complete destruction of Hezbollah.

The US and France had called for a temporary ceasefire to allow for negotiations, but Israeli officials have remained firm in their stance against it. The situation in Lebanon has led to a massive displacement crisis, with over 70,000 people seeking shelter. Despite international efforts for a ceasefire, Israel’s military continues to strike Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.

Former UK Ambassador to Lebanon, Tom Fletcher, has emphasized the need to use diplomatic efforts to bring about change on the ground. He outlined three priorities including de-escalation, involving the official Lebanese army at the border, and re-engaging with the Gaza ceasefire agreement. The situation remains tense, with ongoing rocket launches and casualties reported on both sides.
