Torrington Police are currently investigating a larceny report at St. Maron Catholic Church after at least $500 to $1,000 of donations from weekend services went missing. The church’s priest, Rev. Fadi Khawand, discovered the missing money when they went to count the collections on Tuesday. The weekend was busy due to a celebration honoring Khawand’s 25 years of priesthood. There were no signs of forced entry, leading to suspicions that the money was stolen during the celebration. Neighbors are surprised by the theft, considering the church is a well-known and respected structure in the area, especially since the Torrington Police Department is located across the street.
Despite the theft, Rev. Khawand’s message to the thieves is one of forgiveness, emphasizing the importance of renewal and not repeating such actions. While Torrington Police’s investigation has not yet yielded evidence or witnesses, the church plans to increase security measures. Nevertheless, Khawand maintains faith in the community. Business neighbor Dallas MacDonald expressed disbelief at the incident, highlighting the church’s longstanding presence and the violation of trust associated with stealing from a place of worship.
The theft at St. Maron Catholic Church serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of such institutions and the importance of community support. While the investigation continues, Rev. Khawand’s message of forgiveness and hope for a reformed individual illuminates the church’s commitment to its values and beliefs.
