In a surprise move, the co-leaders of Germany’s Greens party, Omid Nouripour and Ricarda Lang, announced their resignation after the party failed to meet the five percent threshold in regional elections in Thuringia and Brandenburg. The decision comes amid a period of uncertainty for the ruling coalition, as the country faces economic challenges and debates over migration. The Greens have been an integral part of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government, but the recent failures have prompted calls for new leadership.
The Green party, rooted in environmental and anti-nuclear movements, has experienced its deepest crisis in a decade, according to Nouripour. Lang emphasized the need for new leadership to navigate the party through this crisis and prepare for the upcoming national election. Both co-leaders will remain in their positions until successors are elected at a party conference in November.
While the resignations do not directly impact the government, analysts predict that it could lead to greater political instability. Deputy Robert Habeck and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will continue their roles in the government. Habeck acknowledged his responsibility for the election results and called for a reevaluation of the party’s future.
The Greens must adapt to the changing political landscape as the country faces a crucial decision in the upcoming election, said Lang. The party intends to regroup and refocus its efforts to regain support from voters in the lead-up to the national poll. Despite the challenges, parliamentary leader Katja Mast believes the Greens will remain part of the governing coalition.
