A roadside bomb struck a convoy of foreign diplomats in northwest Pakistan, killing a police officer and injuring three others. The diplomats, invited by the local chamber of commerce, were visiting the Swat Valley area. Ambassadors from Indonesia, Portugal, Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Turkmenistan, Vietnam, Iran, Russia, and Tajikistan were among those in the convoy and were safely escorted to Islamabad. Pakistan’s President and foreign ministry condemned the attack, with no group claiming responsibility. The area was placed under curfew as security forces conducted a search operation. The Swat valley has been a stronghold for Islamist militants, with attacks increasing since late 2022. This incident is a reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by Pakistan and the threat posed by terrorist elements. In the past, the valley has been the site of violent incidents, including the shooting of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai in 2012. The authorities are working to ensure the safety of diplomats and address the security situation in the region.
