Chelsea Walsh, a nurse and aid worker in Ukraine during the early days of the war, raised concerns about Ryan Routh, an American in Kyiv recruiting foreign soldiers to fight the Russians. Walsh described Routh as angry, unhinged, and plotting to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite issuing warnings to U.S. authorities, including the FBI and Interpol, nothing was done. This led to Routh being accused of stalking Donald Trump at his Florida golf course in a possible assassination attempt.
Routh’s erratic behavior and violent plans had been flagged in multiple reports to the U.S. government before his arrest. However, the responses of the agencies involved were unclear, raising questions about their ability to handle potential threats.
Sarah Adams, an ex-CIA officer, had also reported Routh’s dubious military recruiting tactics to the State Department, urging humanitarian aid groups in Ukraine to keep their distance from him. Routh’s past criminal record included possession of firearms despite felony convictions, with law enforcement investigations leading back to his actions.
Routh, known for his dangerous plans and self-published book advocating for world leader assassinations, had a history of violence and erratic behavior. Despite the warnings from Walsh and others, federal agencies seemed to have missed crucial opportunities to prevent his actions. This has led to calls for greater vigilance and action from the government to address potential threats before they escalate.
