A Texas couple was sentenced to prison following an incident where their pit bulls got loose and fatally attacked an 81-year-old man in San Antonio. Christian Moreno received an 18-year sentence, and Abilene Schnieder received a 15-year sentence for the mauling that resulted in the death of Ramon Najera and injuries to his wife, Juanita Najera. Firefighters had to use pickaxes to fend off the dogs during the attack, which resulted in the euthanasia of the three dogs involved. The couple was found criminally negligent for not providing adequate fencing and allowing the animals to roam free, leading to the deadly incident. Juanita Najera described the impact of the attack, stating that she now suffers from PTSD and extreme loneliness due to the loss of her husband. Both Moreno and Schnieder pleaded guilty to the charges of attack by a dog resulting in death. Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales emphasized that responsible dog ownership is crucial in preventing such tragic incidents. If paroled, the couple is prohibited from owning or possessing dogs. The judge emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of the community through responsible dog ownership.
