Five Tufts University men’s lacrosse players are currently hospitalized after a workout led by a graduate of a Navy SEAL training program. A total of 12 team members have been diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a serious medical condition that can be life-threatening. The workout session, which was voluntary and lasted 45 minutes, involved about 50 team members and was led by a recent graduate of the BUD/S Navy SEAL training program.
The university’s executive director of media relations, Patrick Collins, stated that the five hospitalized players are being monitored closely, and the university has postponed all team activities until every member has been evaluated and medically cleared. An independent investigator will be appointed to conduct a thorough review to ensure the safety of all student athletes.
Tufts University, which is based in Medford and Somerville, has around 6,700 undergraduate students. The men’s lacrosse team recently secured its fourth NCAA title in May by defeating RIT. As of now, the university is refraining from releasing additional information until the investigation is complete. They are hoping for a speedy recovery for the affected players and are closely monitoring the rest of the team’s condition.
